The harsh browns are shredded potatoes fried until getting brown. This is a too simple description but it’s very clear. In general the potatoes must not be shredded only, but it can be diced, cut into thin sticks.

The mass you’ve got can be combined with eggs, veggies, mushrooms, herbs. It can be refrigerated and even frozen for preparing in the future. Being a popular mass-produced meal it is represented in some cuisines as specialty but in general it is spread all over the world. It is also known as “hashed brown potatoes” and in due course it was shortened.

The “hash” is a French word meaning “to chop” in English so in other words you cook “chopped and fried potatoes”. The potato contains a lot of vitamin C, B6, potassium. It is able to stabilize free radicals, improving health, stimulate production of collagen. It supports the immune system of human organism and has other health benefits. It is used for hundreds of dishes in various state and always is very tasty.

We offer one of hashbrown recipes for dinner that is prepared during 30 minutes in a skillet. This is not only potatoes with beef, onions, cheese and tomatoes. This is an incredible solution that can satisfy and at that it is easy to prepare for the benefit of the whole family.

  • 1 pound lean beef
  • 1 package hash browns
  • 1/2 cup onion
  • 2 cups mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 4 oz Cheddar Cheese
  • 2 cans tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 tsp salt


  1. Prepare the components: chop onion, slice mushrooms, and ground beef. 

  2. Take nonstick skillet, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil into it and put in over the heat.

  3. Place beef and onion into it making them brown.

  4. Add hash browns and mushrooms, making a kind of pancake, spreading the mixture and pressing it down lightly using a spatula.

  5. Cook it during about 6 minutes. The hash browns should become golden brown.

  6. Sprinkle with vegetable oil.

  7. Turn the potatoes pancake over using a spatula.

  8. Continue cooking during 8 minutes achieving the golden crust. But inside the mixture should be well done and tender. If you feel it is not enough cooked, you can turn again.

  9. Place on the top tomatoes, then sprinkle with salt.

  10. Continue cooking until tomatoes are heated through.

  11. Put cheese on the top and wait it is melted. Remove from the heat.

Recipe Notes

You’d better serve the dish hot as a side dish, which suits eggs and bacon perfectly.
