This time we’ll take a tortilla instead of usual bread in order to cook the French toasts. What is tortilla? – ask you. We answer that it is a kind of flat bread originally eaten by the Mexicans or inhabitants of Latin America. It has a shape of disk being thin and made of unleavened dough baked on a griddle.

Usually finely ground maize is used but there are variants with wheat flour. Tortilla is often eaten on its own or can be arranged with various filling, or cut up and fried for getting crusty chips.

Even stale tortillas can be of use. They are fried and added to salads. Thus, there are a lot of ways to enjoy this unique griddle cake for cooking purposes and one of them is French toasts.

  • 4 flour tortillas (6-inch in diameter)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp milled cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (you can use ghee)

  1. Take a not very deep dish.

  2. Add egg, milk and vanilla extract in it then whisk all the ingredients together.

  3. Take another dish and separately mix sugar with milled cinnamon.

  4. Now you should take a griddle and put it on the medium heat. Wait for about 3 minutes, put some butter in it and brush the bottom carefully using spoon or other correspondent tool.

  5. Take a tortilla and dig it in the egg mixture, watching it to be well-soaked on both sides. Place it into the griddle. Make the same with each tortilla.

  6. Keep the tortillas during 2 minutes on each side. The surface should be puffed a little bit and become golden-brown. Remove from the heat and put them on a plate.

  7. Season with cinnamon sugar, and fold in half before serving.

Recipe Notes

Such an easy recipe can be complicated by adding of whipped cream, berries and fruits. You can enjoy it with milk, tea or coffee. This homemade dessert will take you just fifteen minutes but you’ll get the energy boost and good spirit for the day long. It is healthy in general though some people may hesitate as to wheat flour. In this case we recommend you to try the same steps with corn tortilla. It is the perfect meal when you are in a hurry. And now we want to give you a hint: in order to guarantee the proper soaking of bread, just dip every slice into the bowl with milky mix and wait for up to 20 minutes.
